Finding Steady Ground in Uncertain Economic Times

In a world where markets move faster than our nervous systems can evolve, it’s no wonder money often taps into our most fundamental fears around safety and security. When that happens, we are no longer responding only to numbers on a page. We feel stressed because our brain’s threat system is activated, making uncertainty feel far more urgent and personal.

Our minds naturally want certainty. We want to know what markets will do, what inflation will look like, how long our savings will last, and whether the decisions we make today will turn out to be the right ones. This can be particularly difficult when dealing with a break-up, financial losses, business changes, or retirement, when there may be less time or opportunity to recover or to contemplate. This is where radical acceptance can be enormously helpful.

Radical acceptance doesn’t mean surrendering your goals or pretending everything’s fine. It means saying: This is what’s happening right now. I can face it without panic, without denial. This kind of acceptance is the difference between trying to control every wave and learning to surf.

We can still make thoughtful plans, seek good financial advice and prepare for different possibilities. What we cannot do is eliminate uncertainty altogether.

Three practical questions to ask yourself: What do I know? What can I influence? What do I need to tolerate? Write your answers under those headings, then deliberately bring your attention back to what you can influence.

This also helps develop self-trust. Instead of repeatedly asking: How can I be certain I’ll be okay?” ask: Come what may, can I trust myself to figure it out? Remind yourself of other uncertain periods you have navigated. Self-trust isn't believing that nothing difficult will happen. It's knowing that you have supports, judgement and resilience available when it does.

And when anxiety is high, resist the urge to make important decisions simply to make uncomfortable feelings disappear. Slow down. Take a walk. Talk to someone you trust. Sleep on it. Remind yourself: I don’t need to solve the uncertain future today.

Psychologists obviously don’t provide financial advice, but we can help with the mindset that helps to live with financial uncertainty. At North Brisbane Psychologists, we help people develop emotional regulation, perspective, self-trust, assertiveness, and greater tolerance of uncertainty during financial stress and major life transitions.

If uncertainty is affecting your mood, sleep, relationships or ability to think clearly, consider reaching out for psychological support.

You cannot make the future certain. But you can become more confident in your ability to meet it.
